What is Lymphedema?

Lymphedema is an abnormal accumulation of fluid which causes chronic inflammation, fibrosis, and adipose proliferation of the affected area. If left untreated it is often accompanied by skin changes and infections. Lymphedema is chronic, but can be managed through manual lymphatic drainage, proper compression, exercise, skin care and self-care practices.

According to the Lymphatic Education & Research Network up to 10 million Americans suffer from lymphedema and lymphatic disease. Cancer treatment is the leading cause of lymphedema in the United States.
